Last weekend, Reef Builders held Reef Stock 2011 at the Denver Downtown Aquarium. Reef Stock is an annual 1-day event that showcases new products, the coolest livestock, and great speakers from the reef industry. I decided to check it out to see what new reef gizmos will be announced and displayed.

EcoTech Marine VorTech MP60w ES Unboxing and Hands-on

I took advantage of the Thanksgiving sale for the 125g that I’m setting up. My orders have started arriving and here’s one of the reef gizmos I’m excited about: the VorTech MP60w ES by EcoTech Marine.

What’s new with MP60, aside from its size, are the air intake and exhaust holes to control heat. You can see them at the top part of the dry-side assembly, as well as at the sides.

The MP60 wet-side assembly is noticeably bigger that its predecessors. Check out the size compared with the MP40 wet-side assembly:

Since I’m still on the set-up phase of my 125g SPS tank, I still don’t have any MP60-in-action videos to show but I will post one early next year.

I purchased this MP60w at Aquarium Specialty during their Thanksgiving Sale.

One of the most highly anticipated products that should come out soon is the new VorTech MP60w ES pump by EchoTech Marine. Officially announced at the recently concluded Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA) in Orlando, Florida, this pump is capable of pushing 7500 gph, which is a dream gizmo for those with larger reef tanks.

VorTech MP60w Specifications
Flow: 3,500 – 7,500 GPH (13,000-28,000 LPH)
Wattage: 10 – 60 watts
Maximum Tank Thickness: 1″ (range 3/8″ – 1″) or 26mm (range 9.5mm – 26mm)
Appropriate Tank Size Range: 120 to 1000+ gallons (450 to 3,800+ Liters)
Dimensions: Wet Side- 4″ diameter by 3″ long. (102mm diameter by 76mm long.) Dry Side – 4″ diameter by 2.8″ long. (102mm diameter by 71mm long.)
Clearance Needed Behind Aquarium: 3.3″ (84mm)

The MP60w comes with the EcoSmart controller that allows you to control the pump’s flow and behavior. It comes with pre-programmed modes that automatically change the speed of the pump, to give a more random water flow in the tank. The controller can also communicate and sync wirelessly with other EcoSmart controllers for a more efficient and balanced water circulation inside the tank. Check out the operating manual (.pdf).
